Everyday in school, when a student wants a teacher’s attention they shout “mas” repeatedly while either standing, leaning forward, and raising two fingers in the air. This is always done in such a way that I feel if I do not give that particular student my immediate attention they might spontaneously combust. When I do not (since it is impossible to call on more than one student to answer at a time), they loudly grumble, look dejected and go “ah, mas”.

Mas is short for mastavlebeli which in English means teacher. Essentially everyday my students are yelling “yo Teach, Teach” at me. I cannot claim to have come to this realization myself, but I am now much more amused by my students scrambling to get my attention everyday. Just a small something to make me smile.
